Corner rebuilding - when the cloth or leather has worn away at the corners we can rebuild and patch them, matching the original materials and colour of the book
Re-casing - when the text block of your book has become detached from the covers we can re-case it with the original cover or can make a completely new case
Endpaper replacement - if the endpapers on your book are damaged or have ugly library stamps etc, then we can replace these with new ones.

 Fine binding

Fine bindings, or extra bindings as they are sometimes known, are books that are made by a skilled bookbinder, using a choice of quality trade leathers, cloths and other materials, and usually decorated with 23.5 carat gold leaf, blind tooling, onlays and inlays..

At The Gently Mad we only use the best covering materials, supplied to us by J. Hewit & Sons Ltd, and therefore can guarantee our customers a high-quality, hand-crafted product that will not only look beautiful but will stand the test of time. Below are some common styles to choose from

Full leather - usually for special editions or personally-prized books - the full leather binding will give your special book the covering it deserves and if require the book can then be hand-tooled in gold (or blind) to give it that extra finish - page edges can be speckled, stained, or gilt edged
Half leather - give your book a handsome appearance with a half leather (leather spine and corners) binding with marble or cloth sides, raised bands, and title piece
Quarter leather - a good choice for slim volumes, the quarter leather binding with cloth sides is an attractive option for those on a budget who like the look of a leather spine
Clothwork - more economical than leather, the cloth binding will give a smart finish to your book and can be blocked in gold to add that special look - cloth bindings can be done as full, half, or quarter depending on taste - buckram is the most popular cloth but there are many others to choose from.
Bespoke printed boards - for a more personal touch your book can be covered in a specially printed paper to suit your needs - for expample, you may want to have a photograph album made with a cover showing one of your favourite photos, a travel journal with a specific route-map as its cover, or an artist's book with one of your paintings on the front board
